Hertog Global Strategy Initiative
The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative is an interdisciplinary summer program that employs historical analysis to confront present and future problems in world politics. The Hertog Initiative is a 12-week program of intensive study, independent research, and collaborative writing on a specific topic in world affairs, sponsored by the Department of History at Columbia University. The Summer 2010 topic is "Nuclear Proliferation and the Future of World Power."
Students in the program spend the first three weeks of the summer in a “total immersion” approach to the study of nuclear weapons and the methods of international history. Then they spend eight weeks conducting an independent project on a topic related to nuclear weapons. Then, in August, the program reconvenes so that students can present their research and produce a joint report. Together, they will produce new, collaborative research to be used by governments, corporations, and non-governmental organizations.
The 2010 Initiative will be taught by Matthew Connelly, Professor of History at Columbia University, and Francis Gavin, Professor of International Affairs, University of Texas. They will be assisted in the classroom by a number of experts in the field, including world-class scholars and top government officials. Confirmed speakers and workshop participants include Robert Jervis, Richard Betts, James Steinberg, Bonnie Jenkins, Scott Sagan, John Lewis Gaddis, and Philip Zelikow.
The 2010 Hertog Global Strategy Initiative will run from May 24 through August 13.
